Jury Duty

Postby Juliet » Mon Apr 30, 2012 5:02 am

Anyone ever done it? I had jury selection today and I managed to get out of it by saying that I was related to one of the witnesses. *whew*

It was for a murder trial, which probably would have gone on for months, the murder itself was committed back in 2008. I guess he's been in the can awaiting his trial. I'm so glad that's over with. :D :D :D

Wow, I have never been called to do that, how scary does it sound! I wouldn't want to hear all the details on a murder...

Good for you for getting out of it. So do they randomly call citizens to do it?

Where I am they get names [randomly] from the voters list. They threaten you with a jail term/fine if you don't report for duty. I have no idea if anyone has actually gone to jail for ignoring a summons. I think they just send out the cops and drag you into court like a dog and give you shit and still make you report for jury selection.

Yeah, I do not want to be on a murder or sexual assault trial. If it were just a drug or theft trial I probably would have kept my mouth shut and taken my chances with getting my juror number called and being accepted or rejected by the prosecution/defence.

When the judge said "you can go" I sprinted out of the court room.

Yeah, I've done it. But my jury duty was a drug case. No murder involved. The only thing bad about it was I didn't want to be there. It was pure boredom. But since someone's life is on the line, you take it seriously.
