After casting almost every actor in the British Empire in the Harry Potter films, the producers of the sixth adventure are going Aussie, hiring Naomi Watts to play Narcissa Malfoy in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, which will start filming with Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and many more this fall. Naomi Watts is currently on break, pregnant with Liev Schreiber's baby, but she won't be needed on the set of Half-Blood Prince until September, right after she gives birth. Naomi Watts will play the wife of Lucius Malfoy and mother of Draco Malfoy and the sister of Bellatrix LeStrange and Andromeda Tonks, and the cousin of Sirius Black. Got that? Good.
According to Cinematical, Narcissa Malfoy is described as a tall, slim, pale, blue-eyed blonde. Naomi Watts sounds like another case of perfect casting to us in a franchise that has gotten it right from film one. Narcissa Malfoy made her first appearance in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, the book, but didn't make it to the big screen. Apparently, she plays a role in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows as well, so it seems likely that the producers would lock down Naomi Watts for that film too, but that wasn't officially announced.
In other great casting news, Joseph Fiennes and Stuart Townsend have signed on for Half-Blood Prince, but the roles they will play are still unclear. Joseph Fiennes is the brother of Ralph Fiennes, who has played Voldemort in the last several Harry Potter films.
The 38-year-old Naomi Watts broke through in Flirting and Tank Girl but really found a second career in 2000 with Mulholland Drive. Since then, Naomi Watts has appeared in The Ring, Le Divorce, 21 grams, We Don't Live Her Anymore, The Assassination of Richard Nixon, I Heart Huckabees, Ellie Parker, The Ring Two, Stay, King Kong, Inland Empire, and The Painted Veil, She has long been rumored to take the Tippi Hedren part in Michael Bay's remake of The Birds, but Half-Blood Prince could put that role in jeopardy. She's already finished shooting David Cronenberg's Eastern Promises with Viggo Mortensen and Vincent Cassel and Michael Haneke's Funny Games with Tim Roth. Naomi Watts rules.
