Contraband is out!

Postby Brian » Fri Jan 13, 2012 8:25 pm

I saw it tonight. It's a decent action/thriller, but it goes a bit flat in it's second half. It has more twists and turns than most movies of this type, as well as a strong cast, so it is definitely watchable. Kate is billed above the title, but she has what amounts to a supporting role. The movie is nearly all Wahlberg and his character's friends and associates. Kate does well with what she has to do, but this is a role that could have been played by any competent actress. Kate is playing a working class wife, and she is made up to look the part. This is as plain as she has ever looked in a movie, and the dishwater blond dye job didn't do her any favors.

The good news is that the theater I went to was sold out for a 10:45pm showing. It looks like Contraband will exceed expectations.

Underworld Awakening and Total Recall will really be her big films.

Contraband was the top of the box office yesterday and will probably take on the whole weekend.

The way things are going, Kate will likely to take herself off of the top on the next week, with Underworld, which is awesome!

Total Recall doesn't release until August. So you probably won't see a teaser until May at the earliest.

The weekend estimate for Contraband looks very good: http://www.deadline.com/2012/01/first-b ... ore-214406

$25 million for the weekend is way ahead of expectations, and the A- Cinemascore means good word of mouth. UW will be #1 next week, with Contraband at #2, more than likely.

Contraband has made 33 million to date. It will easily make it's money back and a nice profit for the studio. Good news for Kate, even if she isn't the main star. As for Underworld Awakening, I expect it to take the top spot, but Lucas' Red Tails might give it a battle.

Thanks Brian for the info.

I'm hoping for a #1,#2 finish, but it looks like UW will be #1 and Contraband will be #3. That's still great box office for Kate.

I enjoyed it more on my second viewing. That might have something to do with my dislike for sold out theaters. I couldn't relax and enjoy the movie on opening night due to the packed theater.

Contraband is still going strong, and has yet to open wide internationally. Current numbers:

Domestic: $56,400,000 89.4%
+ Foreign: $6,700,000 10.6%
= Worldwide: $63,100,000

New numbers for Contraband:

Domestic: $62,103,000 90.3%
+ Foreign: $6,700,000 9.7%
= Worldwide: $68,803,000

I'm a little confused as to what is going on with overseas markets. It looks like Contraband has been released in only one other country to this point. With bombs, distributors are unlikely to waste time and money with an international release, but Contraband has done well in the US, and has two fairly prominent stars. Hopefully the movie will get a full international release once the prints are no longer needed in the US.

I don't know how accurate this is but it seems to be slowly released worldwide.
