The one that really pisses me off is losing the best original screenplay Oscar to Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind which was at best a slightly above average movie and that's being charitable. That's not a major Oscar but at least the losses in other categories were understandable.

Yes, and Eastwood has already won an Oscar. This might have been the last chance for Scorcese.

Sadly, I feel the same way. Although Clint is older, he's still in great shape. Why do the Oscars keep snubbing Scorsese? :x

Out of 11 people I know who saw Eternal Sunshine, none liked it. It had mixed reviews around the US, ending up with a B- average nationally. Everyone I know who saw Aviator enjoyed it and it had an A average nationally. I'm amazed that Eternal was nominated for anything other than Kate Winslet's performance.

Agreed Rory..

Oscar had it right...Eternal Sunshine was the Best Original Screenplay...That's the reason for the two different catagories.."Best Picture"..and "Best Original Screenplay"...

Remember this  ...Oscar could give a bloody hoot about reviews..and what other people thought about a particular film...

Whatever, if the Oscars had awards for weirdest movie or most muddled plot then Eternal Sunshine would've been a deserving winner. The plot was absurd and confused, the pace was badly uneven, and the writing has to take most of the blame for that, although the director didn't help matters. It's true that the Academy doesn't care about critics or public opinion but critics are usually a pretty good indicator in that it's rare for a movie with mixed reviews to be nominated for, much less win artistic Oscar categories. The Academy has made plenty of major mistakes over the years (A Beautiful Mind over Fellowship of the Ring Shakespeare in Love over Saving Private Ryan), this was a minor one.

Maybe since Kate put her all time into acting,
The pearl harbor and the aviator were the closest to oscar awards
